Embrace Your Best Self: The Power of Rest

We have so much to do each day, and we often sacrifice our sleep to get more things done; this strategy may work for a little while, but at some point, your body will demand that you lay down and rest.  Have you ever considered how much sleep you get can affect your health and weight? Let’s be honest: when we’re sleep-deprived, we’re more likely to make unhealthy choices throughout the day. We often opt for quick-fix energy boosts, usually sugar-filled and processed snacks. And that workout we planned? It’s frequently the first thing to do when we’re tired.

For many, this is an ongoing cycle that’s tough to break.

Adequate sleep sets the stage for everything else. “When it comes to body weight, it may be that if you snooze, you lose. Lack of sleep seems to be related to increased hunger and appetite and possibly to obesity. According to a 2004 study, people who sleep less than six hours a day were almost 30 percent more likely to become obese than those who slept seven to nine hours.

Not only does sleep loss appear to stimulate appetite, but it also stimulates cravings for high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods. Sleep can also affect your immune function, aging process, memory, learning, and metabolism. Yes, adequate sleep is a big deal.

So, how can you make sure that you are getting enough sleep? Here are three tips to help you:

  1. Set a Bedtime Goal: Determine what time you need to be in bed each night to get 7-9 hours of sleep. Try it this week and see if you notice a difference in your energy level and eating habits.
  2. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. Keep it calm, dark, and quiet. Consider using a white noise machine or blackout curtains if needed.
  3. Establish a Pre-Sleep Routine: Develop a relaxing pre-sleep routine to signal your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include activities like reading, praying, or taking a warm bath.

Commit to getting ___________ hours of sleep each night this week. Rest in the assurance that as you care for your body, you are honoring the temple God has given you.
