My grandma Leona always told me, “You have to stop trying to save yourself. Just be obedient and let the Lord do what He does best—everything else.” For years, I resisted this wisdom. I didn’t feel safe letting anyone, even God, take control of my life. I thought if I didn’t have control, everything would fall apart. But the truth is, everything did fall apart when I tried to do things my way.
I hit rock bottom financially, emotionally, and spiritually. It was there, in my brokenness, that I finally realized what Grandma Leona meant. God had been waiting for me to get out of the way so He could do what I couldn’t.
To make the misery I felt even worse. The Holy Spirit whispered something to me that changed my life: “No one is coming to save you. The Lord has given you everything you need to succeed. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.”
These words felt heavy and freeing at the same time. God had already given me what I needed; I just needed to trust Him and take the next step.
A while back, when I was still raising my children as a single mom, the Lord gave me the words to a song that I still hold close to my heart:
There comes a time in your life when you must believe in God.
When you must realize that it is not by your power or might that you’ll have victory.
On the contrary, you just make matters worse.
But in His perfect will, that’s where you’ll find peace.
My dear sisters, if you feel like you’ve hit your rock bottom—whether it’s physical, financial, spiritual, or relational—and you’re ready to let God lead, I want to share the steps that helped me find peace and purpose again:
1. Surrender Your Struggles to God
Scripture says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Stop carrying burdens that aren’t yours to bear. Pray and give God every worry, fear, and frustration.
2. Believe You Are Worthy
God has already equipped you to succeed. “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3). Believe in yourself because God does.
3. Act in Faith
Faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Take the next small step, trusting that God will guide your path. Start there, even if it’s just getting out of bed and praying.
4. Surround Yourself with Support
“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Don’t go through this journey alone. Lean on trusted friends, family, or your church community.
5. Rest in God’s Perfect Will
There’s no peace like the peace found in God’s will. Stop striving to control outcomes. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
