When Prayer Feels Like It’s Not Working
Have you ever prayed and fasted, knelt at the altar, asked the prayer warriors at your church to lift you, and still the mountain in front of you seemed immovable?
I’ve been there. Even as a seasoned saint, there are times when spiritual roadblocks appear and simply don’t seem to dissolve, no matter how much I pray and cry out to God. And in those moments, discouragement can creep in, whispering lies that maybe God doesn’t hear you, or worse, that you’re somehow unworthy of His help.
But here’s the truth: God always hears, and His timing is perfect. Roadblocks don’t mean God is absent; they often mean He’s preparing you for something deeper.
Today, I want to share three reasons spiritual roadblocks may be showing up in your life, and what you can do about them.
1. A Roadblock May Be a Call to Surrender
Sometimes, what feels like a roadblock is really God asking us to let go of control. We pray for His will, but in our hearts, we’re still clinging tightly to our plan.
Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV):
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
When things don’t move, pause and ask: Am I truly surrendered to God’s plan, or am I hoping He blesses mine?
2. A Roadblock May Be Spiritual Resistance
The enemy loves to discourage believers, especially when we’re on the verge of a breakthrough. Roadblocks can sometimes be a form of spiritual warfare designed to deter you from pursuing what God has in store for you.
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) tells us:
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
In those times, don’t shrink back, stand firm. Pray with authority, declare God’s promises out loud, and remember that the battle belongs to the Lord.
3. A Roadblock May Be God’s Protection or Redirection
Not every “no” is rejection; sometimes it’s protection. God may be steering you away from something that looks good but isn’t aligned with His best.
Romans 8:28 (NIV) promises us:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
When doors don’t open, trust that God has a better one waiting for you. What feels like a delay might actually be divine redirection toward your true calling.
My Story
I recall praying for a job that I just knew was the perfect fit for me. I fasted, I prayed, I asked everyone I knew to pray. When I didn’t get it, I was heartbroken. It felt like God had gone silent.
Months later, I was offered a position at another organization, a role that not only fit me better but also opened doors for ministry that I never could have imagined. Looking back, I see now that the “roadblock” wasn’t rejection at all. It was God lovingly protecting me and guiding me toward something greater.
Sometimes, what feels like an unanswered prayer is actually God saying, “Daughter, I have something better for you. Trust Me.”
Sis, You Have Got This
Spiritual roadblocks are not signs of failure; they’re invitations. Invitations to surrender, to stand firm in the Spirit, and to trust God’s redirection. Instead of letting them discourage you, let them draw you closer to Him.
Friend, when your mountain won’t move, remember: you’re not climbing alone. God is with you every step of the way. Alright, my friend, that’s all I have for you today.
