When I first joined the church, I thought I was stepping into a community of unwavering love, respect, and support—a place where everyone lifted each other, handled disagreements with grace, and truly lived out the love of Christ.
And sometimes, that was true.
But many times, it wasn’t.
Disagreements arose, friendships fractured, and our pastors or ministers had to step in to help mend relationships. As difficult as it may be to accept, not everyone will like you—even within the church.
Jealousy, doubt, and distrust—the very struggles we face in the world—also exist within the body of Christ. But unlike the world, God has called us to respond with love, humility, and grace.
So, how do we handle it when we feel disliked, excluded, or even mistreated by fellow believers?
1. Love as Christ Loves You
It’s natural to feel hurt when someone dislikes you, especially within the church. But instead of reacting with resentment or bitterness, choose love. Why? Because love is not an option—it’s a command.
1 John 4:7-8 (NIV) reminds us:
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love.”
When someone treats you with unkindness, remember that their actions are not a reflection of your worth but of their struggles. Respond with love because God’s love is within you.
2. Pray for Those Who Hurt You
Prayer has the power to soften hearts—yours and theirs. When someone dislikes or mistreats you, instead of dwelling on the pain, take it to God in prayer.
Jesus set the ultimate example when He prayed for those who crucified Him, saying,
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34 NIV)
Pray for those who hurt you. Ask God to bless them, soften their hearts, and bring healing to any hidden wounds that may be causing their actions.
3. Walk in Humility and Grace
As difficult as it may be, this is the test of our faith.
It’s easy to love those who love us back, but true Christlike love is loving those who reject us. This is what sets us apart as followers of Jesus.
1 John 4:20 (NIV) says:
“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”
Humility doesn’t mean being a doormat; it means trusting God to handle the situation while you walk in obedience. Show kindness even when it’s undeserved, extend grace even when it’s not reciprocated, and remember that God sees your heart and your efforts.
A Little Encouragement
If you’re struggling with feeling disliked or excluded in church, you are not alone. Jesus Himself was rejected, misunderstood, and even betrayed—but He never stopped loving.
When you meet dislike with love, you reflect God’s heart in the most powerful way.
So keep loving, keep praying, and keep walking in grace. Your reward is in heaven, and your Father is pleased with you.
