Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Start Walking

There’s something about fall that feels like a fresh start. The air is crisp, not too hot and not too cold. The colorful leaves crunch underfoot, and the cool breeze seems to whisper peace as I take my morning walks.

For me, walking has been more than just exercise; it’s been a lifeline. Thirty-four years ago, after my third child was born, the Lord placed walking on my personal “wellness list.” He knew I would need something to calm my nerves, boost my mobility, and give me dedicated time with Him. Over the years, walking has become both a physical discipline and a spiritual practice.

And here’s the truth: walking isn’t just about burning calories, it’s about building faith. It’s about learning to pray on the move and strengthening both our physical and spiritual muscles.

Walking in Scripture

Throughout the Bible, God’s people were always on the move:

  • Moses walked up Mount Sinai to receive God’s commandments (Exodus 19).
  • Abraham walked by faith into the unknown, trusting God’s promise (Genesis 12).
  • Jesus walked from town to town, teaching, healing, and fulfilling His mission (Matthew 4:23).

Walking became the backdrop for faith, obedience, and transformation. And it can be the same for us.

Three Ways Walking Strengthens Faith and Health

1. Walking Builds Faith Muscles Through Prayer

When you walk, your body moves in rhythm. That rhythm is the perfect invitation to pray. Step by step, you can cast your cares on the Lord and intercede for others.
📖 “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Use each step as a prayer: one step for gratitude, another for petition, another for praise.

2. Walking Guards Against the Enemy’s Arrows

The enemy would love to wrap you in fear, doubt, or discouragement. But when you walk and pray, you’re putting on the armor of God in motion.
📖 “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)
Your walk becomes an act of defiance against fear, a declaration that you are moving forward with God.

3. Walking Strengthens Both Body and Spirit

God cares about your whole being, mind, body, and soul. When you walk, you’re not just improving circulation or mobility; you’re also carving out sacred time with the Lord.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you? Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Each walk is an act of stewardship, honoring the body He entrusted to you.

Insight to Carry With You

Walking is simple, but it is also powerful. It grounds us in the present moment, opens space for prayer, and reminds us that faith is a journey. You may not always see the full path ahead, but as you move, step by step, God strengthens you for the road He has called you to walk.
