Hello friend, and welcome to Empowered Faith Media, where we share the perfect love of Christ in an imperfect world.
When I worked in the field of mental health, one of the most effective strategies I taught my clients was how to use music to calm their minds and ease their anxiety. Music is powerful; it can evoke memories, stir emotions, and gently shift our spirit from chaos to calm.
As Christian women, we have a treasure trove of music to draw upon when we feel disconnected and need to be reminded of God’s glory and His purpose for our lives. Gospel music is healing, renewing, and life-giving. It reaches into the tender places of our hearts and reminds us that God is still in control, even when everything around us feels uncertain.
When Words Fail, Music Speaks
In 2001, when I separated from my husband, I experienced some of the darkest days of my life. During that season, I couldn’t always read my Bible; my mind was too crowded and weary to focus. Prayer felt like trying to speak underwater, muffled, distant, and heavy.
I left my comfortable suburban home with five children, our dog, and no plan other than to get us to safety. I didn’t know what the next day would hold. Fear and uncertainty were constant companions. But even in that wilderness season, God met me through music.
Two albums became my lifeline: Donnie McClurkin’s Live from London and Fred Hammond’s Purpose by Design. Their songs carried me through sleepless nights and tearful mornings. The lyrics reminded me that even when I couldn’t pray, even when I felt completely unmoored, God was still present, still holding me, still guiding me, still faithful.
When your heart is too broken to form words, when your thoughts are tangled and your spirit feels dry, music becomes the prayer. It speaks the language of the soul when your own words fall short.
Why Music Helps
Music connects the emotional and the spiritual in a way nothing else can. It slows racing thoughts, eases tension in the body, and gently opens the door for the Holy Spirit to move.
Songs rooted in faith remind us of eternal truths, that we are loved, forgiven, and held in God’s hands. The right music redirects our focus from our pain to His promises, helping us find stillness amid the storm.
How to Choose the Right Music
Not every song soothes the soul. To truly find peace, you must choose music that nourishes your spirit:
- Select songs that glorify God. Look for music filled with hope, praise, and truth.
- Match your moment, but move upward. It’s okay to start with songs that reflect your emotions, sorrow, fear, and frustration, but let your playlist lift you toward faith and joy.
- Find your faith sound. For some, it’s classic hymns. For others, it’s contemporary worship or soulful gospel. Listen for what makes your heart exhale.
Making Music a Ritual of Peace
Music shouldn’t just be something we turn to in crisis; it can become a sacred rhythm in our daily lives. When you’re triggered, angry, or simply overwhelmed, try these three steps:
- Pause and breathe. Take a moment to invite peace in.
- Press play intentionally. Choose a worship song that reminds you of who God is, not just how you feel.
- Pray through the lyrics. Let each verse become your prayer until your heart softens and your spirit rests.
Over time, this practice becomes a holy ritual, one that anchors you even when life feels chaotic.

Reconnect
Sometimes, even the strongest and most devout among us lose our way. We get tired, discouraged, or spiritually dry. The right music can help you pause, reflect, and remember that God’s love has never left you. If life feels loud right now, if your heart feels far from God, you are not alone.
That’s why I created a free guide called “Miracles in Everyday Life.” Life gets loud, but this simple resource helps you reconnect with stillness, celebrate small joys, reflect on Scripture, and listen for God’s voice.
